Is Hogwarts Legacy really worth it?

Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most anticipated games of recent years, especially for Harry Potter fans. The game promises to immerse players in a magical adventure inside Hogwarts Castle, where they can create their own character and choose the path of their own story.

However, after spending some time with the game, I have to admit that it did not completely meet my expectations. Although there are several aspects of the game that have been well executed, such as the setting and the almost manic attention to detail in recreating Hogwarts Castle and many other locations in the Wizarding World, there are some issues that have impacted my overall experience.

One of the main issues with Hogwarts Legacy is its equipment system. Although it’s a common feature in role-playing games, the equipment system in Hogwarts Legacy is too convoluted and not very rewarding. Often, players will come across useless items with minimal improvements, and the item transformation system is unintuitive and not very functional. Despite there being some unique items, players often find themselves using the items they have available only because they offer a statistical bonus, rather than for their usefulness in the game.

Another aspect of the game that I found disappointing is the lack of meaningful choices. Despite being able to choose your own path in the story, many of the choices are fairly superficial and don’t have a significant impact on the overall plot. This is a shame, as it would have been great to see choices that influence the game world and the characters you encounter, offering a greater sense of freedom and customization. Furthermore, forget about becoming the new Duelling Club champion. Although it’s possible to learn the main “Unforgivable Curses” during the course of the game, using them won’t have any repercussions on the development of your character or their relationships with other characters.

The game also carries some issues related to inclusivity that I have discussed in a previous article which you can find here.

However, there are also positive aspects of Hogwarts Legacy. The setting is well done and the details of Hogwarts Castle have been accurately and detailedly reproduced. Even the art direction, or rather, the graphics, is very beautiful and the lighting and visual effects create an enchanting and magical atmosphere.

What are you buying?

In the end, Hogwarts Legacy is a game that has the potential to be much more than it has managed to be. The poor implementation of RPG mechanics and the lack of interactivity with the game world prevent the game from reaching its full potential. Although the game still offers a satisfying gameplay experience, there is a feeling that an opportunity to create a truly memorable game has been wasted. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, it’s definitely worth taking a look, but if you’re looking for a deep and engaging RPG experience, perhaps Hogwarts Legacy isn’t the game for you.
