There is no doubt that the board game we played the most during the passed Christmas holidays was Carcassonne.
We decided to tell you about it because we think Carcassonne is one of those games that should be part of the collections of all players.
Carcassonne is a game by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, released in 2000 by the German board game publisher Hans im Glück. In 2001 he received the most coveted award for a board game which is the Spiel des Jahres.
The game consists of creating a medieval landscape by placing and matching various types of tiles, which represent a part of the city, a stretch of road, a field, or other types of landscape, depending on the version of the game or the available expansions. Thus completing more cities, roads, rivers, etc. through these tiles, the players accumulate the points necessary to win the game.
During a Carcassonne game, players have to make decisions like, “Is it really worth putting my last meeple there?” or “Should I use this tile to expand my city, or should I instead place it next to my opponent, making it difficult for him to complete his blueprint and score points?” Since players only place one tile and have the option to place a meeple on it, turns proceed quickly even though it is a game full of options and possibilities.
Followers, or meeples, can take on many different roles in Carcassonne (knights, monks, peasants or thieves) determined by the type of tile they are placed on. Each role scores points differently, so we will need careful planning to make the most of our followers. For example, thieves are placed on the streets and get one point for each tile that makes up that street. On the other hand, the monks are placed in the cloisters and score nine points, one for each tile surrounding the monastery, when the last of those nine tiles is placed. We have a limited number of followers and, once placed, we will not be able to retrieve them until the location they are on is complete.
